Fatuma's Tower, Shela

Fatuma's Tower is a yoga and meditation retreat house set towards the back on Shella Village, some 3km north of Lamu Town on the island of Lamu. You don’t have to be in to yoga to stay here but you should be prepared for a simpler life, no alcohol, excellent communal meals, lots of rest and relaxation and time for thinking and reflecting. More like staying as a guest in someone’s house than a hotel.

Fatuma’s Tower is well located, for the village, beach and Lamu Town. In the main house there are 6 rooms spread over the three floors of the main building and the house divides comfortably into two with separate kitchens. Ground floor is the Garden room with 2 double beds with en-suite bathroom and access directly out on the main garden area. Also on this floor are 2 smaller single rooms, which share a bathroom.

First floor is the Balcony room which contains a double and a single bed together with an en-suite bathroom. Top floor is a self-contained apartment with private access and which can be booked separately from the remainder of the house. The apartment has two double rooms both of which are en-suite. All the rooms are furnished with simple and perhaps even a Spartan style, which seems to fit with the cleansing of the body, mind and spirit that this house exudes.

Kijani House, Lamu

Located in the island of Lamu, Kijani House offers a unique accommodation with its 2000 sq. meters of tropical garden, which leads directly to the sea, and two fresh water swimming pools. Each room has a bathroom and has its own balcony or veranda facing the garden and the sea. The rooms are spread throughout the garden into three small separate traditional Swahili buildings which formerly were private homes, made of coral walls, with boriti ceiling and makuti roofs the kitchen offers all types of fish, lobsters, crabs and prawns fresh from the sea, along with meat and fresh vegetables, together with African and Italian specialties.

Kipungani Sea Explorer ****

Kipungani Sea Explorer on Lamu Island has 14 spacious and secluded chalets constructed with local materials. Each room has a large king size bed and furniture all handmade. Activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, creek or deep-sea fishing, and bird walks.

Kisimani House - Lamu ***

Kisimani House is found in Shela Village on Lamu Island. It has been built like a fortress and has been beautifully furnished in Swahili style. There are four en-suite bedrooms, miscellaneous single beds, a large open-air living/dining terrace and private verandas on the ground floor. The two top floors have spectacular views of the ocean, the archipelago and of life in Shela village. In the endless white sandy beaches surrounding this hotel, the sea is clean and safe for swimming, goggling, skiing, windsurfing, sailing and fishing.

Kiwayu Safari Village *****

Kiwayu Village in the Lamu Archipelago combines great natural beauty with exotic accommodations, marvelous food, and perfect peace and privacy. The village nestles under a tall stand of coconut palms on the White sand beach of a sparkling secluded bay. There are 22 cottages. Dinning at Kiwayu Safari village is a delight - giant crab claws, platters of lobster, perfect salads and amazing fish soup. Wind surfing, goggling, creek fishing, and deep-sea fishing is also available.

Kizingoni House, Shela ****

Kizingoni House is a striking beachfront property at the southern tip of Lamu Island, on the far end of Shela Beach - famous for its 12 kilometers of wild, untouched seashore and ancient sand dunes that have recently been designated part of the Lamu World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Remote and peaceful, it is a 20-minute boat ride from Lamu town and Manda airstrip. Turtles lay their eggs on the beach where long walks are a joy: snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, fishing, dhow sailing, camping out on desert island beaches, water skiing, wake boarding and kite surfing are all possible.

The house has 4 bedrooms, all en-suite, with roof fans, mosquito nets and their own private balcony with sea views. The large master bedroom faces west with a superb beach and sea view framed by coconut palms. Its spacious bathroom has a Swahili style bath/shower. There is direct access from the master bedroom to the rooftop patio and bar area.

The house is simply furnished with traditional Swahili items of furniture and some fabrics and pieces from Africa and Asia. There is sufficient linen to provide for 8 guests. The pool terrace has another large bar, a dining area, sun beds, a covered baraza terrace and a separate shower and changing room. Internet is available in the house. The house has a staff that includes room stewards, a cook and there is a boot and captain for personal use.

Manda Bay Resort, Manda Island Lamu *****

Manda Bay Resort, the former Blue Safari Club is a small private lodge on Manda Island in northern Kenya’s Lamu Kiwayu archipelago on a secluded peninsular, close to ancient Lamu Town and neighboring Shela but far enough away from the bustle to enjoy total privacy. Surrounded by magnificent coral gardens, empty beaches and indigenous woodland there are ten spacious cottages line the beach overlooking the calm waters of Manda Bay. Manda Bay Resort is a glorious destination for both active and leisurely. It has its own airstrip and there are three scheduled flights daily to Lamu from Nairobi and Mombasa. Modern communications allow email and telephone access to the outside world if you choose to be available.

Mnarani House is a luxury property in Shella Village, Lamu Island, Kenya. Situated on the edge of the Indian Ocean in the ancient village of Shella, Mnarani House offers the opportunity to relax in a timeless world of mosques and sail with no motor transport; a world of days gone by, a world stood still. Exclusive use of the house on a self-catering basis for max. 8 adults staying in 3 en suite doubles and 2 singles. It has five separate sitting areas, solar hot water in three double bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen, full time housekeeper and cook and telephone.

Munira Island Camp - Kiwayu ****

Situated on Kiwayu Island in the Lamu Archipelago, this camp has spacious bandas, each beautifully positioned with panoramic views of the ocean and total privacy of the occupants. Kiwayu is 12 miles long and a half-mile wide and has an extensive mangrove creek system; ideal for bird watching and light tackle fishing. The 7 comfortable and spacious bandas, built of makuti and Jambies (local matting made from palm fronds).

New Lamu Palace Hotel ***

Lamu Palace hotel is located in Lamu town and directly on the seashore. It has 22 rooms all air-conditioned. There is a restaurant on the rooftop and a more spacious one on the terrace serving seafood, as it's speciality. The hotel provides a boat shuttle to the nearby Manda island for sunbathing and snorkelling.

Peponi Hotel - Lamu ***

The hotel is right at the water’s edge in Shella Village, a few kilometres from Lamu town. There are only 25 rooms at Peponi hotel, which vary somewhat in size and the atmosphere is simple and elegant. The hotel specializes in seafood and has both a table d’hote and a’la Carte menu.

Petley's Inn - Lamu ***

Petley's Inn is in Lamu town and located directly on the seashore. It is one of the oldest hotels in Kenya. It has 11 rooms, which are air-conditioned and also a swimming pool. There is a roof top bar and a restaurant for serving seafood specialties.

Stone House, Lamu *

Stone House Hotel is situated in the heart of the old Lamu Town, just a short walk from Lamu's main street and waterfront, and offers simple, clean accommodation in 10 self contained rooms and 4 with sharing bathrooms. Rooms are decorated with typical Lamu style furniture, and mosquito nets and fans are provided. The hotel has its own reliable water supply (no hot water. The Tana Delta Camp *****

Totally unspoilt, the Tana Delta Camp gives a taste of wilderness right on the Indian Ocean. This unique camp is situated by the mouth of the mighty Tana River, north of Malindi Town in Lamu district, on a curve of a 30mile beach with huge sand dunes marking the edge of Unguana Bay, with Tana River on one side of the camp, the Indian Ocean on the other side.

The Pool House, Shela ***

Shela House at Shela Beach on Lamu Island is a complex of old buildings surrounding three separate courtyards filled with fragrant tropical trees and plants. There are two self-contained buildings, each with a double bedroom, dressing room, full bathroom with hot water. It has a third double bedroom, bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area and a veranda overlooking the pool. One courtyard has a jasmine covered pergola and separate grill area for outdoor dining. At night all courtyards are candle lit for a magical effect.

The house is looked after by a house steward who takes care of the cleaning, laundry and the pool, and a professionally trained cook who is experienced in preparing both local and European cuisine. The rental includes breakfast (fresh fruit juices, tea, coffee, French toasts, omelettes) and laundry services. Juices, tea and coffee can be served at any time of the day.
